April 14 – Just curious if anyone else in Kentucky played softball on April 14. Dixie Heights, Apollo, Lexington Catholic, and Bryan Station were to play a round robin at Lexington Catholic. After waiting until almost 2:00, and watching it rain all day, it finally cleared and the two teams that travelled the furthest took to field to warmup for a game. Apollo and Dixie Heights played not just one game, but two games. Since Lexington Catholic has probably the only 100% artificial turf field in the state (no real grass and no dirt), then both teams were able to take the field when it stopped raining.

Enoch Welch’s (former coach at Western Hills HS) father passed away this past week. Condolences from the KSCA go out to Enoch and his family. This summer -- Owensboro Catholic High School standout Meagan Aull was selected Second-Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Aull is the only Kentucky player named to the three teams compiled by the association. The 5-foot-7 shortstop will be a senior at Catholic this year.
She batted .439 for the Lady Aces, with 48 stolen bases and 29 RBIs, and she finished with a slugging percentage of .874.
One of her biggest games last year was a two-homer, five-RBI game against Bullitt East on April 6 in Owensboro.
"I've matured quite a bit as a hitter," Aull said earlier this year. "When I was younger, I was a little more anxious at the plate. I would still hit the ball somewhere, but sometimes I was hitting the pitcher's pitch, not mine.
"Now, I'm a lot more patient. I try to hit my pitch, and I try to drive the ball. I try to swing the same way every time."

April 10 – What a year! My dad passed away on May 10, 2004. Almost one year later, my mom passed away on April 6. I went from preparing for our team’s spring break trip to sitting with my mom in the hospital (then hospice). I missed the trip. You just cannot take anything for granted! When my dad died, mom’s heart was broken. A broken heart along with the help of a stroke and lung cancer finally took my mom. Both Mom and Dad were wonderful people in my life. I was so fortunate to have them as parents. It will definitely be different without them. Life must go on! That is what they would tell me. Anyway, I’m sorry that I have not updated the website much lately, but with my mom being sick, I have been pulled in another direction. I have not had the physical or mental energy to get it done. I will try to do a better job in the coming weeks. Good luck to all the teams this season! -- Bob Griggs (Lexington Catholic Softball Coach & KSCA Webmaster)
February 13 -- From the KSAA -- Additional clarification on pitchouts and intentional walks: (when a team attempts to throw four (FP) balls out of the strike zone).
1) Does the catcher have to be directly behind the plate when the pitcher has started her motion? As long as the catcher is "in the box," she can be behind the batter's box all the way to the side line of the catcher's box if she wishes.
2) Is there any rule that would prohibit the catcher from standing behind the batter's box when the pitcher starts her delivery? No.

December 9 -- Sad News (from Stanley Jackson, asst. coach at Caldwell Co.)
Amanda Gilbert was killed in a car crash a couple of days ago.. She graduated last year and had been a member of our team for four years. She never made All State, not even All Region. She had difficulty getting to practice and games at times. But she always made it and gave 100 percent. That says a lot about her character! She loved the game.Today she will be buried in the blue and gold uniform of the Caldwell County Lady Tiger Softball.
As coaches, let us never overlook nor underestimate the impact that the game of softball and we, as coaches, have on our youth.
--Stanley Jackson

Christian County Hitters: Driver 2-9 (2 singles, run scored), Greenwell 1-8 (single), Caldwell 2-9 (2 singles), Vowell 1-7 (single), Long 2-8 (2 singles, GW RBI), Travis 1-8 (single)
A pitcher's dual between two of the best in the state provided the entertainment for 4 hours 30 minutes and set a state record for the longest game with 22 innings played in Christian County's 1-0 win. In the bottom of the 22nd inning, pitcher Sarah Driver led off for the Lady Colonels, now 28-8, with a single to center. Autumn Greenwell sacrificed her to second with a bunt with an 0-1 count. Lindsay Caldwell then slapped an infield single to the second baseman allowing Driver to advance to third with Caldwell rounding first and moving to second without a play. Calloway then intentionally walked Leslie Vowell to load the bases for Hailee Long with one out. With a 1-1 count, Long lined the game winning single over the shortstop's head scoring Driver for the win.
In the top of the 22nd, Driver and the Lady Colonels worked out of a threat from the Lady Lakers as Greer singled with one out. After Driver struck out Chadwick, the #9 hitter, Dial, singled to left and both runners advanced to second and third as Ryan Travis overthrew second base. With the leadoff up, Starks, Driver jammed her to pop out to shortstop for the last out of the inning.
May 11 – I am very sad to report the passing of my father (John Griggs) at 4:40 am on May 10. As I had hoped, he went very peacefully. He was such a great influence on my life and many others lives. He was a very special man. He was one of "Bear’s Boys" at UK. He played on the Orange, Sugar, and Cotton Bowl teams. He was also the captain of the 1952 team. He had many more accomplishments in his life, but probably his biggest accomplishment was that he was a great husband and a great father (7 children). He loved his family and friends. He will be missed so much by all that knew him. John Griggs (June 11, 1931 – May 10, 2004) Picture below of Dad in his first head coaching job as Leslie Co. High School’s first football coach (26 years old). Dad is the one on the right.

May 9 – I am very sorry if I have not gotten everything posted like I should have. There are some things that have been sent to me (tournaments, etc.) that I just have not had time to do. I have spent a lot of time at the hospital with my father recently. He is in Hospice, and I do not expect him to make it through tonight. He has had a long painful battle with several health issues, and his suffering will soon end. Do not feel sorry for me or my father, as he is no longer in pain, and I did get to spend much quality time with him over the past week. I will keep up with posting information the best that I can, but you will need to have patience and understanding. Thank you—Bob Griggs
