2009

6-4-09 NSA and Champions Sports will be holding a college showcase the weekend of August 29-30 at Cardinal Run Fields in Lexington.  The event is for individuals and they will be placed on teams to play 4 games during that weekend.  If they are interested, they need to register at www.championslexington.com.  There will be a maximum of 132 girls accepted.

5-9-09 Shirley Beard (head coach at Estill Co.) asked to post:  Estill Co. lost one of its softball family Thurs. morning.  The teams’ 3rd base, Brittany Woolery’s father passed away on Thurs. from pancreatic cancer while she was in Washington on her Senior Trip.  Brittany played on the Junior East All-Star Team last season. David Woolery had kept our Stats for the last 3 years.  His funeral is Mon. morning at 11:00.  It is a hard time for the team at the end of the season, so please keep the team in your prayers.

5-3-09 South Laurel recorded it’s 400th victory.  Larry and Kay Smith have been coaches during all these victories.

4-19-09 Coach Jesse Huff picked up his 300th win at Hopkins County Central in a 2-0 win over Dawson Springs on Friday April 17th.  Huff has been the school’s only coach in its 13 years.  The win gave Huff 343 career wins overall in fast pitch(43 at South Hopkins ) and it gave him 461 overall(  128 in slow pitch).

4-12-09 George Rogers Clark HS won it’s 400th fastpitch game this past Saturday.  Jackie McCloud has been the head coach for all the victories.  Congratulations to Coach McCloud and all the players that have been a part of all the victories.

2-22-09 A nice turnout at the KSCA Meeting on Feb. 21.  Daryl Murphy of Cumberland Co. was elected as the 2nd VP.

Aug 5 -- Congratulations to Coach Tom Opdenbrouw as he will begin a new job as assistant coach with Tennessee State University.  Tom has been very supportive of the KSCA and has been a speaker at several KSCA clinics in the past.  Good luck with your new team!

May 4 - Coach Penny Reece, head coach of the Greenwood Lady Gators, picked up her 400th career victory on Tuesday, April 29 with a 2-0 win over Beech, Tn.

Murray State University is adding softball, beginning season is set to be 2009-2010.

April 20 – Owensboro Catholic Lady Aces head coach George Randolph earned his 400th coaching victory April 16th. The 400th win came in his 13th season with the Lady Aces defeating Owensboro High School 16-1.

New state pitching record Kirsten Allen of Ryle HS set this past week. She now has 89 Career Shutouts to pass Becky Abner's career mark of 86.

January 1, 2008 – Happy New Year! All head coaches are required to attend a rules clinic each year. Assistants may attend, but are not required. The KSCA Annual Clinic/Meeting offers speakers, KHSAA rules clinic, and coaches meeting. All coaches are encouraged to join the KSCA and attend the meeting. It will be held on January 26 at Centre College. There will be speakers in the morning, rules clinic at 1:30 pm; followed by the annual coaches meeting. 2007

October 1 – James "J L" Thomas who coached 16 years for Estill Co. High School Softball passed away last Saturday. His funeral will held on Tuesday at 2:00. He will be missed greatly by many in his community.

September 9 -- Krystal Lewallen is accepting individual or group pitching lessons for high school teams needing them. She is a former NCAA All-American who played at South Oldam then went on to Northern Kentucky and finally pitched for Louisiana-Lafayette and one season for the Texas Thunder in the Women’s Professional League. April 29 – Tony Burkeen picked up his 400th fastpitch win against Cobden, Ill. in the Marshall Co. Slugfest on April 27. Tony is the current coach at Christian Co. He was formerly at Reidland High school where he coached them to 2 state championsips. Congratulations Coach Burkeen!

April 14 – Just curious if anyone else in Kentucky played softball on April 14. Dixie Heights, Apollo, Lexington Catholic, and Bryan Station were to play a round robin at Lexington Catholic. After waiting until almost 2:00, and watching it rain all day, it finally cleared and the two teams that travelled the furthest took to field to warmup for a game. Apollo and Dixie Heights played not just one game, but two games. Since Lexington Catholic has probably the only 100% artificial turf field in the state (no real grass and no dirt), then both teams were able to take the field when it stopped raining.

April 8 – Woodford Co. Head Coach Stephon Brown lost his father this past Wednesday at 4:10 am. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

March 1 -- Krystal Lewallen, former South Oldham pitcher, is now giving pitching lessons to those interested. Krystal pitched 3 years at Northern Kentucky University, where she built an impressive resume. Krystal played her final year of college at Louisianna Lafayette, where she helped guide the team to the Regional Finals. Krystal has numerous awards and accomplishments. She held the lowest ERA for Div II in 2004 and 2005, was the Div II Softball Player of the Year in 2005, the Div II Honda-Broderick Woman of the Year in 2005, a Two Time All-American and compiled 1,040 career strikeouts. November 13 – Randy Lawson will be stepping down as head coach at Male HS. He wants to spend more time watching his daughter play softball at Georgetown College. He said it was hard to leave the team, and he will miss seeing the coaches at the games during the season.

Enoch Welch’s (former coach at Western Hills HS) father passed away this past week. Condolences from the KSCA go out to Enoch and his family.This summer -- Owensboro Catholic High School standout Meagan Aull was selected Second-Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Aull is the only Kentucky player named to the three teams compiled by the association. The 5-foot-7 shortstop will be a senior at Catholic this year.

She batted .439 for the Lady Aces, with 48 stolen bases and 29 RBIs, and she finished with a slugging percentage of .874.

One of her biggest games last year was a two-homer, five-RBI game against Bullitt East on April 6 in Owensboro.
"I've matured quite a bit as a hitter," Aull said earlier this year. "When I was younger, I was a little more anxious at the plate. I would still hit the ball somewhere, but sometimes I was hitting the pitcher's pitch, not mine.

"Now, I'm a lot more patient. I try to hit my pitch, and I try to drive the ball. I try to swing the same way every time."

June 15 – The KSCA is now awarding plaques for All State honors to 2nd Team as well as 1st Team. Honorable Mention will still receive a certificate. In the past the KSCA had give certificates to 2nd Team. These awards will be presented at the All Star Games at the University of Kentucky Softball field on Saturday, June 17. June 7 – Condolences to Vernon Bibb and his family. His mother passed away last week.

June 6 – Enoch Welch (Western Hills) has resigned as head softball coach. He will continue to coach the boys basketball team at Western Hills. Enoch served as the KSCA President in the 2004/2005 season.

June 6 -- Coach Jesse Huff of Hopkins County Central won his 400th game as a softball coach when Hopkins County Central defeated Caldwell County in the 7th district championship on Tuesday May 23, 2006. Coach Huff has 282 fastpitch wins and 118 slowpitch wins. He has won 239 games at Hopkins County Central and won 161 at South Hopkins High School.

Also during that game KY STATE HR LEADER MEGAN SHADRICK HIT HER 30th Home Run.

May 14 -- Cortney Bentley, a senior pitcher at Shelby Valley High School, tied Becky Abner's Career Wins Record with a 1-0 decision over Manual Saturday, May, 12, 2006, at the Lowe's Classic. Later that afternoon, Cortney broke the record with a 4-1 win over Larue County. Cortney now has 126 career wins. Cortney has signed to play softball at Pikeville College next season.

May 11 -- Lindsay Davis, senior shortstop for Christian Academy of Louisville has broken the high school state record for career doubles. She tied the old record of 68 against Grant Co. Friday night and got number 69 the next day against Lexington Christian during the Lady Knights Memorial Tournament at Lexington Catholic this past weekend. She is approaching the 300 career hit mark as well. Lindsay is a 6 year starter from CAL and a 3 time 1st team all state player. The Centurions will be back in Lexington on May 19th and 20th playing in a round robin at Paul Dunbar High School. She has signed to play her college ball at Kentucky Wesleyan.

April 25 -- Hopkins County Central Megan Shadrick broke Tabitha Embry record for most career HR when she lead off the game vs Caldwell Co on April 24th and hit her 24th career HR over the left field fence.

2005

August 7 -- Krystal Lewallen has pitched her last softball game in a Northern Kentucky University uniform.

Lewallen committed to Louisiana-Lafayette, choosing the Ragin' Cajuns over UCLA as the destination for her senior season.

Lewallen, the 2005 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year after finishing 32-1 with a 0.36 earned run average, 20 shutouts and 335 strikeouts, can pitch in 2006, her final year of college eligibility.

May 14 Kalyn Fox recorded her 1000th career strikeout May 12th in a game against Marshall County.

Cortney Bentley of Shelby Valley earned her 100th win with a 13-4 decision over Phelps High School. As a junior, she is on track to beat the state record her senior year.

April 18 -- Grayson County finished 2nd in the 51 team Bob Jones torunament April 8th and 9th. During the tournament Michelle Critchelow recorded her 1000 K. Beth Glasscock hit 2 Hr in the tournament. Alicia Strickland was named the oustanding defensive player of the tournament.

April 10 – What a year! My dad passed away on May 10, 2004. Almost one year later, my mom passed away on April 6. I went from preparing for our team’s spring break trip to sitting with my mom in the hospital (then hospice). I missed the trip. You just cannot take anything for granted! When my dad died, mom’s heart was broken. A broken heart along with the help of a stroke and lung cancer finally took my mom. Both Mom and Dad were wonderful people in my life. I was so fortunate to have them as parents. It will definitely be different without them. Life must go on! That is what they would tell me. Anyway, I’m sorry that I have not updated the website much lately, but with my mom being sick, I have been pulled in another direction. I have not had the physical or mental energy to get it done.  February 13 -- From the KSAA -- Additional clarification on pitchouts and intentional walks: (when a team attempts to throw four (FP) balls out of the strike zone).

1) Does the catcher have to be directly behind the plate when the pitcher has started her motion? As long as the catcher is "in the box," she can be behind the batter's box all the way to the side line of the catcher's box if she wishes.

2) Is there any rule that would prohibit the catcher from standing behind the batter's box when the pitcher starts her delivery? No.

Why should coaches join the KSCA? See below:

  1. KSCA dues pay for this website, the All State Awards, and a sponsorship for the KY Prep Softball All Star Weekend.
  2. 108 girls in 3 classifications now get All State recognition (used to be 40 statewide). This has opened the door for more small schools to get their players recognized. Your school must be a member of the KSCA.
  3. Academic All State for girls the participate in half the varsity games and have a GPA of 3.25 or above. Must be a member of the KSCA.
  4. KSCA member schools players’ are eligible for the KY Prep Softball East/West All Star Games.
  5. Members can post their tournaments and more.

2004

December 9 -- Sad News (from Stanley Jackson, asst. coach at Caldwell Co.) Amanda Gilbert was killed in a car crash a couple of days ago.. She graduated last year and had been a member of our team for four years. She never made All State, not even All Region. She had difficulty getting to practice and games at times. But she always made it and gave 100 percent. That says a lot about her character! She loved the game.

Today she will be buried in the blue and gold uniform of the Caldwell County Lady Tiger Softball.

As coaches, let us never overlook nor underestimate the impact that the game of softball and we, as coaches, have on our youth.

Christian County Hitters: Driver 2-9 (2 singles, run scored), Greenwell 1-8 (single), Caldwell 2-9 (2 singles), Vowell 1-7 (single), Long 2-8 (2 singles, GW RBI), Travis 1-8 (single)

A pitcher's dual between two of the best in the state provided the entertainment for 4 hours 30 minutes and set a state record for the longest game with 22 innings played in Christian County's 1-0 win. In the bottom of the 22nd inning, pitcher Sarah Driver led off for the Lady Colonels, now 28-8, with a single to center. Autumn Greenwell sacrificed her to second with a bunt with an 0-1 count. Lindsay Caldwell then slapped an infield single to the second baseman allowing Driver to advance to third with Caldwell rounding first and moving to second without a play. Calloway then intentionally walked Leslie Vowell to load the bases for Hailee Long with one out. With a 1-1 count, Long lined the game winning single over the shortstop's head scoring Driver for the win.

In the top of the 22nd, Driver and the Lady Colonels worked out of a threat from the Lady Lakers as Greer singled with one out. After Driver struck out Chadwick, the #9 hitter, Dial, singled to left and both runners advanced to second and third as Ryan Travis overthrew second base. With the leadoff up, Starks, Driver jammed her to pop out to shortstop for the last out of the inning.

May 11 – I am very sad to report the passing of my father (John Griggs) at 4:40 am on May 10. As I had hoped, he went very peacefully. He was such a great influence on my life and many others lives. He was a very special man. He was one of "Bear’s Boys" at UK. He played on the Orange, Sugar, and Cotton Bowl teams. He was also the captain of the 1952 team. He had many more accomplishments in his life, but probably his biggest accomplishment was that he was a great husband and a great father (7 children). He loved his family and friends. May 9 – I am very sorry if I have not gotten everything posted like I should have. There are some things that have been sent to me (tournaments, etc.) that I just have not had time to do. I have spent a lot of time at the hospital with my father recently. He is in Hospice, and I do not expect him to make it through tonight. He has had a long painful battle with several health issues, and his suffering will soon end. Do not feel sorry for me or my father, as he is no longer in pain, and I did get to spend much quality time with him over the past week. I will keep up with posting information the best that I can, but you will need to have patience and understanding. Thank you—Bob Griggs

April 18--With Reidland's 2-0 victory over Lone Oak last Thursday--the Lady Greyhound Softball Program picked up its' 300th win since the inception of fastpitch softball in 1995. Congratulations to Tony Burkeen and the Reidland Softball Team.

April 12—Tates Creek coach, Larry Caudill & his wife Tracy have a new addition to their family. Tracy gave birth to a baby boy on Easter Sunday. Congratulations!

Lori Bayless (formerly of George Rogers Clark) has broken a few records at Tennesee Tech since she began there 3 seasons ago. She has broken the win record; it was 52 wins (she broke it a couple of weeks ago in Knoxville in Tournament), where she also broke her college record for strikeouts in a game with a career high of 13. April 4 –Montgomery County sophomore first baseman Paige Garrison broke the KHSAA state record for most home runs in a game by hitting three out against Powell County on April 1, 2004. There had never been a ball hit out of Powell County's park in Stanton until Garrison blasted three in four at bats. According to KHSAA state records, the old mark of two in a game had been accomplished 14 times. Garrison also tied the state record for most home runs in consecutive at bats with two.

If you have not entered your schedule into the KHSAA site, then you need to either:

1. Give your schedule to your AD and have him/her enter it for you.

2. Get the password from your AD and go to http://www.khsaa.org/memberschoolpage.html to enter your schedule.

After entering your schedule, anyone will be able to access your schedule and scores at http://scoreboard.12dt.com/scoreboard/khsaa/kyfp4

You are supposed to call in all your scores within a reasonable timeframe following each game. The number is 1-800-715-8388.

I believe that you may be able to enter the scores online as well by logging in at http://www.khsaa.org/memberschoolpage.html

 March 10 –Happy Birthday to KSCA Website. The website turned 5 years old today! We have seen membership grow from 104 in 1999 to the current membership (listed above). It’s been great to see coaches from all across Kentucky join the KSCA.

Feb. 21 – New membership record at 282. The old record was 278 (last year). The KSCA keeps growing! The main goal of our organization is to promote the sport, teams, and players. JOLLY COMMITS TO LSU
Owensboro Catholic senior pitcher Megan Jolly has made a verbal commitment to accept a scholarship offer from Louisiana State University.

Jolly helped led the Owensboro Catholic Lady Aces to their third state fastpitch championship last year. She went 18-3 with a 0.64 earned run average last season and struck out 261 batters and walked just 21 in 143 innings. Megan was a member of the All-9th District team, All-3rd Region Tournament team and was named 2nd team All-State. Megan was also named to the All-State Tournament team, the Lady Knight All Tournament team and a member of the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region 2nd team. She was the only player from Kentucky to be slected. Megan is also a candidate for the 2004 Kentucky Miss Softball title.

Jolly is also a honor student and a member of the student council. Megan made first team All-State Academic in 2003.

MONARCHS FINISH 4-1 AT RISING STAR IN FLORIDA
Kentucky Monarchs at Rising Stars Showcase Plantation, Florida

Last weekend, led my Miss Kentucky Softball candidate, Megan Jolly, the Kentucky Monarchs finished with a 4-1 record at the Rising Stars Showcase in Plantation, Florida. The Monarchs was the only Kentucky team among the 90 elite teams from 21 states.

During three games, Megan (Sr., Owensboro Catholic HS) pitched 10 innings of scoreless softball striking out 17 batters and giving up only three hits. In the Monarchs final game against the Virginia Legends, Megan recorded nine strikeouts in four innings of work while giving up only one hit.

Michelle Critchelow (Jr., Grayson County) also pitched ten innings of scoreless softball in four appearances. Michelle struck out nine batters and gave up three hits. Other pitchers included Haleigh Ashworth (Jr., Owensboro Catholic HS), Kalyn Fox ( Jr., Calloway County HS), Jamie Ogles (So., Allen County - Scottsville HS) and Ashley Stovall (So., Allen County - Scottsville HS)

Team pitching statistics for the five games were:
(ERA = 0.62 / IP = 34 / SO = 47 / BB = 8 / H = 19 / R = 5 / ER = 3)

Offensively, Beth Glasscock (Jr. Grayson County) led the Monarchs with a slugging percentage of .833 which included a double, a triple and a home run. Ashley Cooksey (Sr., Allen County - Scottsville HS) recorded seven hits and had the highest batting average with .467.
Ashley led the Monarchs in steals with two. Michelle Critchelow recorded four hits and an On Base percentage of .600.

Team offensive statistics for the five games were:
(BA = .256, OB% = .380, SLUG% = .355, OAB = 121, OB = 54, H = 31, SO = 19, BB = 15, RBI = 17, R = 22)

Defensively the Monarchs were anchored in the middle infield with Kalyn Fox at shortstop and Haleigh Ashworth on second. Brooke Kreisle (Sr., Hancock County) played first and Beth Glasscock was at third. Stephanie Coomes (Sr., Owensboro Catholic HS) caught most of the innings during the tournament without a pass ball and throwing out two of four stealing attempts. As a team, the Monarchs gave up only three errors during the entire tournament!

September 4 – Ali McNulty (Lexington Catholic and Furman Universiy graduate) accepted a job with Centenary College. After completing an excellent 4 year career at Lexington Catholic (1st Team All State) and a 4 year career at Furman University, Ali will begin her first year as a coach. She will be a full-time assistant to former Lafayette coach, Mark Montgomery. Centenary College is located in Shreveport, Louisiana. It is the smallest Division I school in the country. Congratulation Ali!

August 14 -- Megan Jolly of Owensboro Catholic made the Louisville Sluggers/NCFA High School All-Region 2nd Team. Megan was a member of the South Central Region. She is the only player from Kentucky to make the team.
